What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a full medical system recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization).

Ayurveda mean “Science or knowledge of life”. It is ancient sacred knowledge cognized by the rishis or seers of truth during deep meditation. It was passed down thru generations by chanting in the form of shlokas (verses). About 5000 years ago the shlokas (verses) were recorded in the Rigveda. Ayurveda is the balance between nature and us. Knowledge of Ayurveda helps us create and maintain balance of mind, body and spirit.

What are Sattvic foods?

According to Ayurveda eating satvic foods or foods with high energy or prana brings calmness, joy, clarity in thinking, enthusiasm and creativity. Sattvic foods are fresh organic fruits and vegetables, organic grains, organic beans, honey, organic milk and organic ghee or clarified butter

What is dosha or body constitution?

According to Ayurveda the entire universe is made up of five basic elements- Ether, Air, Fire, Water and earth. Just like each person has their own unique thumbprint each person has their unique dosha or body constitution type. Ayurveda identifies three basic types of dosha or body constitution type—Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The three dosha or body constitution type are also made up of these elements. Vata is composed of Ether and Air, Pitta is composed of Fire and a little bit of water. Kapha is composed of Earth and water elements. Vata is associated with movement, Pitta with transformation or metabolism and Kapha with structure. All people have Vata, Pitta and Kapha present but usually one is primary, one secondary and the third less prominent.

What's my dosha type?

To determine your Prakruti see which dosha characteristics describe you or which of these characteristics you have possessed most of your life. After going thru the list of characteristics add up the total under Vata, Kapha and Pitta. This will help discover your own ratio of doshas in your prakruti.

To determine your Vikruti go over the table one more time repeating the exercise and discover your own ratio of doshas in your Vikruti. Most people will have one predominant dosha a few will have two doshas with equal ratios while fewer will have three doshas in equal ratio.
